A Pittsford Crew alumnus, Scott J. Laio, personified the qualities of a competitor, teammate and friend to the fullest during his short life. Scott was well loved by his teammates for his dedication and passion for life and for the sport of rowing.
Scott was a true competitor who worked tirelessly to not only achieve his goals and aspirations but also exceed the goals set by his coaching staff and peers. As co-captain of Pittsford Crew’s boys varsity crew team, Scott also had a unique ability to inspire his teammates to achieve success both at practice and on race day. Scott had a caring and compassionate spirit and was able to inspire his team to create a spirited rowing atmosphere that surrounded the William C. Warren III boathouse. Scott’s passion for life was also shown as he strived for excellence in the classroom. Upon completion of his studies in Pittsford Mendon High School, Scott attended Boston College where he pursued a double-major in Biology and Marketing while continuing his rowing career as an oarsman for the Boston College Lightweight Crew. Scott did not merely focus on his own rowing endeavors; it was his desire to pass on his passion of rowing to a younger generation of rowers. Never forgetting his roots at Pittsford Crew, Scott ecstatically coached Pittsford’s learn-to-row summer camp where many of the campers he coached continue to partake in the sport due to his infectious excitement of rowing. Unfortunately, in 2005, Scott’s life ended sadly and unexpectedly. This vibrant young adult passed away following a first place finish in the Boston College lightweight 8 event at his favorite race, the Dad Vail Regatta, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Scott is survived by his parents D.J. and Mary Laio, sister Lauren and brother Michael. Every year, Pittsford Crew is proud to present a scholarship to two seniors (1 from the girls team, and 1 from the boys team) who exemplify the same qualities towards the sport of rowing and passion for life as Scott did.
